What Makes Granite So Useful?

Most of us are well-aware that granite finds a lot of applications in construction and decoration – but what is it exactly that makes it such a good material? If you look around any high-grade building, you’re bound to see at least some granite decorations, and there’s a good chance the whole floor may be covered in thick granite slabs as well.

Granite has been used for a very long time in human history – it can be traced all the way back to the Egyptians, who made extensive use of the material in their pyramids and other luxurious constructions. Granite is quite heavy, though compared to other stones used in construction its weight is moderate at best. Last but not least, a rather odd group of people who greatly appreciate the qualities of granite are rock climbers – ask anyone who’s keen on climbing mountains with a pickaxe and a rope and they’ll tell you that there’s nothing better than scaling a granite peak. The material tends to make some quite steep slopes, and it forms numerous cracks and crevices, making it a varied and challenging surface for rock climbers. There are even some spots around the world popular for their high concentration of granite climbing venues.

All in all, we can only expect the use of granite to keep increasing as time goes by – more people are realizing the strong benefits it provides over other popular construction materials, while having little next to no downsides. Granite may not be ideal for everything – and it’s certainly not the most affordable material out there – but the number of its applications is truly staggering.
